My Story

Before coming to the Roger Williams University School of Continuing Studies to build and develop our Gateway to College program, Jillian taught in Providence for ten years and then worked at the RI Department of Education as Coordinator of English Learner Education.  She earned her Ph.D. in English with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Rhode Island, with research interests in stand-up comedians as public intellectuals and social activists, along with a graduate certificate in Digital Literacy.  Her M.A. in ESL and Cross Cultural Studies is from Brown University, and her B.A. in Secondary Education and English, with a minor in Spanish, is from RWU, where she also worked as an adjunct writing instructor for two years, so she’s pleased to be returning to Hawk status!

Jillian earned National Board certification in Adolescent English Language Arts and serves on the RI Teen Book Awards Committee, where she is committed to improving students’ opportunities to encounter what Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop describes as “windows and mirrors” in their reading, or stories that reflect their experiences and backgrounds as well as stories that offer insights into the experiences and backgrounds of others.  Jillian also teaches cardio kickboxing and runs, although not as fast as her husband, who is an art teacher and woodworker, and to be honest, their son is gaining on her too.
