Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC)

Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) was created in 1972 to provide educational opportunities to service members who, because of their frequent reassignments, had difficulty completing college requirements.

SOC is funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) through a contract with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The contract is managed for DoD by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES).

  • Being a member of SOC, allows us to offer associate and bachelor’s programs to members of the military, their spouses, and adult children worldwide.
  • We offer flexible program options that allow distant service members and their families the ability to complete their degree.
  • RWU awards credit for military experience and training based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations, and standardized tests such as CLEP and DSST, where appropriate.
  • RWU School of Continuing Studies issues a Student Agreement (SA) to all service members. This agreement serves as a “contract for degree” between the student, the student’s military branch and RWU and remains in effect until degree completion.
